In the pulp and paper industry, caustics and chemicals are utilized during a variety of steps in the paper manufacturing process including bleaching, PH monitoring, coating, and finishing. During the cooking phase of the Kraft pulping process, caustic soda is combined with hot water to break down organic wood matter into pure wood pulp. Other chemicals are applied throughout the pulping process to purify, bond, and color the freshly extracted pulp.
