Sump systems are designed to protect building basements and sub-basements from flooding. Found at the lowest point in a basement, a sump pit collects drainage and groundwater from outside the surrounding basement walls. Drainage systems are designed to direct the flow of natural and storm water to the sump system. Sump pump systems are put in place to control the sump pit water level. When the water level has reached a designated point, sump pumps kick on and transfer excess water to municipal storm drains or designated runoff points.
